Botanical paintings on fabric and textile installations
Textile, Sound and Scent art installation
Traces of Memories is an installation that weaves together art and science, evoking our deep-rooted connection with the natural world. Presented at the National Museum of Natural History and Science in Lisbon (MUHNAC) in 2025, the installation draws inspiration from historic herbaria, field research, and data from the Red List of Threatened Species.
Creation process & materials
Inspired by the heritage of Anna Atkins’s cyanotypes and historical herbaria, Rosa focuses on plants classified as extinct or critically endangered according to the IUCN Red List. She began with preparatory gouache compositions on paper before creating the final large-scale textile paintings. For these works, the artist chose organic Portuguese cotton and eco-friendly water–resin-based paints, blending them to achieve natural, uneven shades. Each textile artwork measures approximately 180 × 280 cm. Through a thermofixation process that sets the pigments into the fabric, the paintings remain both durable and washable.
